COMMERCIAL TECH → DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

Win a DIU contract with commercial technology — no small-business badge required.

The Defense Innovation Unit buys commercial and dual-use tech through Commercial Solutions Openings, awarding non-dilutive Other Transaction prototype contracts in as little as 60–90 days — and successful prototypes can jump straight to sole-source production. NSIC adds ~$1–3M awards for pre-Series-A hardware at TRL 3+. This guide covers how both work — whether you're a funded startup, a stealth team, or an idea on a whiteboard — and how engineering simulation proves your physics before a program office ever sees it.

Prove the physics

The technology these funders back usually has to be simulated before it's believed. We arrange Ansys evaluation licenses, live engineering support, and free learning — so you can build the MVP that wins.

Who this is for

Two things have to be true

You're looking for funding in this ecosystem — and you have (or will have) technology that needs to be simulated to prove it works.

A few of the programs

OTA

DIU Commercial Solutions Opening (CSO)

DIU's core solicitation vehicle. DIU posts Areas of Interest (specific operational problems) and any commercial entity can respond. It's a competitive, three-phase funnel: solution brief, pitch, full proposal.

~$500K–$10M+ prototype (varies by problem) · Non-dilutive

OTA

Other Transaction (OT) Prototype Agreement

The contract you actually sign after winning a CSO. Authorized under 10 U.S.C. §4022, it sidesteps most FAR/DFARS overhead — no DCAA audits, lighter IP terms, faster negotiation.

sized to the prototype scope · Non-dilutive

Production

Production Other Transaction (P-OT) — the follow-on prize

The real payoff. A successful prototype OT can transition, without re-competing, into a sole-source production OT or FAR contract — often worth far more than the prototype. DIU reports ~51% of completed prototypes transition to production.

$10M–$100M+ (e.g. Anduril's ~$99M counter-UAS P-OT) · Non-dilutive
